Environmental Audit

At the end of March the Green School Committee began by examining the impact of litter and waste in our school. We went on a school walkabout with a camera, collected and recorded areas of the school grounds where litter was a particular problem. We examined classrooms during the day and found that rubbish was being mixed up in the bins and some classrooms could be tidier. We came up with some ideas as to how we could reduce litter and waste and then produced our action plan.....

Action Plan

Implement a ‘Litter-picker’ programme to monitor litter & waste in our school

Label all bins into recycling/non-recycling

Give every classroom a battery recycling box

Make sure every classroom has a paper recycling box/tray

Organise a Green day for the whole school community to do a litter clean up on April 18th,

2011

Green Day April 18th, 2011

On April 18th we had a ‘Green Day of Action’ in the school.

Heather and Paul gave a presentation to the whole school about what we found out on our litter survey and our plan of action. We found out a lot of interesting stuff! You can see the below presentation for more details.

After break the whole school set about cleaning up the litter around the school. We collected 9 black bags of rubbish outside!! Everyone helped clean up their classrooms and we put up recycling and non-recycling labels and ‘Litter-picker’ notices in all the classrooms. Thanks to Ulla, Adrienne and Catherine too for putting the shine back in our windows!! We also bought two garden pots which the children planted flowers and plants in and helped brighten up the entrance to our school.

What’s next??

Monitoring and Evaluation

Through the Litter-picker programme we will be monitoring each classroom to check that all litter and waste is separated into the correct recycling and non-recycling bins and we will also be checking the classroom floor tidiness. We will track all classrooms on a daily basis and report on how we are improving our waste management

Green Code Colouring Competition

Every school participating in the Green School Programme needs a Green Code so we will be launching a Green Code Colouring Competition in May. The Green School Committee will be visiting each classroom next week to kick off the competition. We’ll be looking for some colourful and clever codes.... J
