Elections of a new female parents representative to the Board of Management will be held as part of the Parents Association Annual General Meeting scheduled for 6th October 2010 from 7:30 pm, in the school.

Boards of Management are responsible for the direct governance of schools. Their role is to provide leadership and ensure effective management of the school, within an agreed school budget and a framework of accountability. Parents serving on school Boards of Management provide a crucial, valued service for their whole community and your involvement is greatly appreciated.

The responsibilities of the Board include:

  • Developing and reviewing the school plan
  • Developing school policies
  • Ensuring the quality of pupil learning
  • Ensuring the high quality of teaching
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation
  • Ensuring that schools are adequately insured and maintained, etc.

You can find more information about the role of the Board of Management and the Board's workings in a booklet "The Board of Management in Your Primary School – A Guide for Parents" available for consultation/download below.

Procedure regarding parental nominations for parent representatives on the Board of Management

  • At the meeting nominations will be sought for a female representative
  • If there is only one nominee, the nominee will be deemed elected
  • If more than one nomination is received, a secret ballot shall be held at the meeting. Two tellers shall be appointed.
  • Each person voting shall have one, non-transferable vote.
  • The votes shall be counted in public.
  • The election shall be determined on a plurality of votes (i.e the first past the post system).
  • The result of the ballot shall be notified to the parents and to the patron's representative.
  • The voting returns from the ballot may be retained for the purposes of co-option in order to fill vacancies occurring during the life of the board where it is decided, having consulted the parents' association, not to have a by-election.

Please note: The Chairperson, the Principal and teaching staff cannot nominate a parent representative. If you are interested in being considered for this position but maybe unable to attend the election, please contact Niamh Kelly (Chair of PA) or Fergus O'Brien (parents rep on BoM, email treasurer@maynoothet.ie).
